Creating a new website from the ground up or updating an existing website can be a daunting task. However, like any other project, it can be accomplished in small steps. If your company needs a new or updated web presence, give us a call. We can manage the entire project for you or simply provide advice along the way. Either way, we are here to help.

So, where do I start?

Before purchasing hosting services or a domain name, it is important to first research, research, research. People commonly make the mistake of buying hosting space for a particular content management system (CMS) before realizing their site is not compatible or they do not like the tools the CMS provides. While most hosting providers will let you switch to a different CMS offering, it might cost you time and/or money.

Another common mistake is purchasing a domain name and then finding out later it is similar to a competitor’s name. Whenever possible, your domain name should closely match your company’s name and distinguish you from your competitors. Changing a domain name after the fact is difficult and can cause marketing issues.

Where can I search for available domain name?

WhoIs.net is a good place to start. An ideal domain name would be .com. If you are able to get the perfect domain name, consider buying the same name with .net, .org, .us, etc. This prevents someone else from buying those domain names later and possibly competing with your business.

So you found the perfect domain name - now what?

Once you find the domain name you want, you need to purchase it with a registrar. We’ve listed a few below:

I purchased my domain name - now what?

After purchasing your new domain name, it’s time to decide if you want to build your own site from scratch, purchase a template or hire someone else to build your site. We typically direct customers toward purchasing a professional website template. Professional templates cost anywhere between $40 and $500, depending on style, complexity and features. However, building the same site from the ground up could easily cost several hundred to several thousand dollars.

The websites below provide professional templates as well as good customer support.

Now I have a website template and a domain name - now what?

Your next step is to decide where you want to host your website. Your hosting requirements will be partially dictated by whether or not your template is CMS enabled, the size of the website, the amount of traffic you plan to generate and your overall budget.

J&B Technology provides web hosting for WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and Static HTML sites. Since we build and manage our own servers, we can custom tailor a hosting plan to fit your individual needs. Below are a few other hosting options as well.
